Why is Wellness the Wealth of today??

The importance of health and wellness has certainly come to the forefront of the health industry in the last decade. With the baby boomer generation nearing or entering their senior years, strained health and medical services, and the realization by greater numbers of people of the limitations of medical science, society has developed an increasingly prominent attitude of responsibility towards one's own health and wellness.

No longer are people solely relying on doctors or hospitals to make them better if they get sick. Instead, the approach has changed to one of illness prevention, to maintain or improve the state of health that already exists. The incredible boom in the health industry overall bears witness to these trends.

The importance of health and wellness is reflected by the fact that diets, weight loss programs, exercise programs and equipment, fitness facilities, spas, nutritional supplements and activity/leisure groups of all sorts are now commonplace in our everyday lives. Some of these changes are driven by the extreme demands and long waits for treatment in the health care system, but also by the desire of the working generation for a more active lifestyle after retirement, with the hope of being fit and well enough to participate in their chosen activities. For these goals to manifest into reality the base of good health must be built up throughout life, not just to try to repair the damage after it's been done.

So it has become clear why Wellness is the "Wealth" of today. Only by placing the importance of health and wellness as a priority now can anyone make the most of their future

Wellness- It's History and Development

'Wellness' has a complex past! Some of the ideas of wellness have their origins in the ancient European & American religious and cultural movements.

The term "Wellness" though was defined in the 1950s. It then focussed on active health promotion through lifestyle change.

It was the 1970s that witnessed the "Wellness Movement".

Since the term wellness is very broad, it is extremely difficult to define precisely what is meant by it, and therefore to correctly trace its origins. It is a contextual word, where it is possible to define the term within a specific context.

When talking along the lines of Holistic Health & Wellness, the six-dimensional model of Wellness developed by Bill Hettler of the National Wellness Institute helps one understand Wellness better.

The 6 dimensions include –
  • Social,
  • Occupational,
  • Spiritual,
  • Physical,
  • Intellectual &
  • Emotional

 These include the following precepts:

Social:

·         It is better to contribute to the common welfare of our community than to think only of ourselves.
·         It is better to live in harmony with others and our environment than to live in conflict with them.

Occupational:

·         It is better to choose a career which is consistent with our personal values interests and beliefs than to select one that is unrewarding to us.
·         It is better to develop functional, transferable skills through structured involvement opportunities than to remain inactive and uninvolved.

Spiritual:

·         It is better to ponder the meaning of life for ourselves and to be tolerant of the beliefs of others than to close our minds and become intolerant.
·         It is better to live each day in a way that is consistent with our values and beliefs than to do otherwise and feel untrue to ourselves.

Physical:

·         It is better to consume foods and beverages that enhance good health rather than those which impair it.
·         It is better to be physically fit than out of shape.

Intellectual:

·         It is better to stretch and challenge our minds with intellectual and creative pursuits than to become self-satisfied and unproductive.
·         It is better to identify potential problems and choose appropriate courses of action based on available information than to wait, worry and contend with major concerns later.

Emotional:

·         It is better to be aware of and accept our feelings than to deny them.
·         It is better to be optimistic in our approach to life than pessimistic

Are you sure you really understand the concept of Wellness??

Just answer yourself these questions..
  •  Do you feel that you are doing all that is necessary to be Mentally & Physically healthy?
  •  Do you consider your lifestyle healthy just because you are pumping yourself full of vitamins, calcium and minerals?
  •  And yet, are you surprised at the fact that you tire out sometimes and don’t always feel in the pink of health?

Are you sure you really understand the concept of Wellness?

Wellness is about living life to its fullest potential.. Wellness is a comprehensive & proactive approach to the Health & Happiness of the  Mind, Body & Soul..

This approach recognizes that these three-health's (mind, body, spirit) are inter-twined and overall health suffers if even one of these  isn't healthy..

What really is this 'Wellness'??

Wellness is for everyone. There are no prerequisites to Wellness.. It is not about just being strong, or muscular or  just disease-free!! One can be 'Well' & yet be old or be nervous & anxious when going through trials, or even be physically impaired! Wellness has nothing to do with our so-called 'Imperfections'.

As a matter of fact, its never late to be 'Well'. No matter which state or stage of life we are in, we can always begin to love, appreciate & respect ourselves today..  Once we accept our now, we start growing for the better and thus find ourselves living a much happier life & with great health, both physically & emotionally.

Thus, Wellness is about learning to love & accept oneself - our whole self, as we are today & where we are today. I strongly believe that acceptance is the key, that can unlock the treasure of a wonderful life. Wellness is thus, about being proactive, taking full controls of our lives, and channelling our energies to transcend us to higher levels . It is about the choices we make.

In short, it is about Us..!!

Homeopathy for the TEENS.. a few Tips & Quick fixes..

The vulnerable teenage years are wonderful & most memorable too. But one can have a  difficult time if he/she is not able to keep up with today's times. Today’s teens face the pressures of juggling school/college, classes, homework, extracurricular activities, a social life & sometimes even a part-time job or an internship. While consultation with a qualified homeopath is essential for serious situations, a selection of homeopathic remedies can help with common teenage health conditions associated with physical and emotional stress.

    1) Fatigue:
For physical and mental weariness, especially in young people who are growing fast, Acidum phosphoricum is very useful. It is a good standby when thinking clearly becomes difficult and relaxation is almost impossible. Acidum phosphoricum also helps the teenager to unwind, get a good night’s sleep and to concentrate better at school the next day.

    2) Anxiety:
Anxiety plays a big part in the lives of most teens. For nervousness before an exam or an important event, Argentum Nitricum is best.

    3) Relieve Menstrual Pain:
Many teenage girls find menstrual cramps so debilitating that they’re unable to go on with normal day-to-day life. The best homeopathic remedy may be specific to an individual case, but the three most often helpful are
    i) Magnesia phosphorica if heat relieves the pain,
ii) Colocynthis if pressure on the painful area gives relief, and
iii) Chamomilla if the girl tends to be weepy and cranky during menstruation.

    Coming back with more soon..
